                                     Dmitri Mendeleev

Mendeleev's Periodic Table

Dmitri Mendeleev.Today(8th February,2016) is his 182nd birthday, thanks to Google that I came to know about it. Mr. Mendeleev was responsible for my less marks in chemistry. He made Periodic table, and that was difficult for me to memorize. But his contribution in the world of sciences cannot be ignored because of my marks. So this post is in honor of the great scientist that helped chemistry prosper.

Early Life
Dmitri Ivanovich Mendeleev was born on February 8, 1834 in Verkhnie Aremzyani, in the Russian province of Siberia. He had a big family with many siblings. His father was a teacher.
Unfortunately, when his father went blind, his mother opened a glass factory in order to sustain family.
This also didn’t work and factory had to be closed. He was 15 at that time and had already lost his father. Mendeleev got a place where his father worked and was trained as a teacher.

This was the inception of his love for sciences. He began to publish research papers and despite being suffering from tuberculosis, he came out to be the best student in class. His love for chemistry only got further with this.

Chemistry and periodic table
Mendeleev had been trained both as a teacher and a chemist. He had a good fortune at Heidelberg, Germany where he discovered cesium using chemical electroscopy.
In 1860, Mendeleev attended the first ever international chemistry conference, which took place in Karlsruhe, Germany. Much of talks were related to standardizing chemistry and its elements. This conference helped him to dig deeper in this area. At the conference, he also learned about Avogardo’s Law which states that:
All gases, at the same volume, temperature and pressure, contain the same number of molecules.

After that he came back to Saint Petersburg, and felt the need for advancement of chemistry there. He felt that Germany was much more advanced in science than Russia. In order to bring chemistry at the forefront in Russia as well, he, in just 61 days poured out his knowledge in a 500 page book called Organic Chemistry. Prior to this there were no significant chemistry books in Russian language. This firmed his position in Russia, as the pioneer in the world of chemistry.

But in the world, chemistry was still a field of discovery and patchworks. There was nothing that could bring it under some principles. This triggered the idea of periodic table.

Mendeleev used cards and wrote elements name and their properties on it. Obsessed with it, he arranged cards under various combinations to generalize them. He got the idea that atomic weight is the reason but could not find the pattern. Hours after hours, after arranging the cards, he finally came up with a pattern. At that time only 65 elements were discovered. There were numerous gaps and thus he was certain that some elements were yet to be discovered. In some cases, where the properties of elements were not matching his predictions, he proposed that may be, this was because of inaccurate atomic weights of elements. By this time, his periodic table was referenced by researchers while discovering new elements.

There were numerous periodic table that came before and after Mendeleev’s but he came out to be the leader of the pack.

In 1905, the British Royal Society gave him its highest honor, the Copley Medal, and in the same year he was elected to the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

Element 101 is named Mendelevium in his honor.

Dmitri Mendeleev died in Saint Petersburg, February 2, 1907, six days before his 73rd birthday. He was killed by influenza.

.                                        HINDUISM

Hinduism is one of the major religions of the world which does not call for any introduction. It has no founder, no beginning and neither the end. Hinduism is more than a religion, it is consciousness. Although  It is mainly associated with India but Hindus ,like Indians can now be found all over the world. Religion is known for its epics, customs, stories and what not. So this article is mainly based to celebrate the magnificence of Hinduism and not intended to hurt anyone’s sentiments.

1.The glory of epics- Hinduism is widely known for its great epics. Whether it is the story of Lord Rama in Ramayana or the largest of them all Mahabharat, each one of them gives its readers a chance to be wise. These subtle teachings are eternal. Alike Shakespearean play they represent our society and human nature irrespective of the time.

Apart from that, Bhagvad Gita and its teaching is also acknowledged throughout the world by people irrespective of their religion. Various translations are being done in order to make it comprehendible by the masses. Although no one can arrive at a particular meaning of those words. Gita give  its readers what they actually want, what they ask for. It seems like it has all the answers. It helps the seeker to look within.

Prior to epics there were Vedas, Upanishads. Although we may get them now in written form, various translations of them are also available but that was not the case in the first place. In the yore, it was taught orally i.e it was a oral tradition that passed through generation and ages until it found its form in writing. This tells us about how old and great the religion is.

2.The glory of yoga- Hinduism has always been associated with practice. Its not the end but the path that is of value. This religion is often associated with yoga, meditation, spirituality. This helps a human being to relax his body as well as mind and feel one with the God, just like inter-being .Practice is what constitutes the religion since the word Religion comes from the Latin word religio which consists of two words, viz., re (back) and ligare (to bring or bind).

Yoga, now more pronounced than ever has its origins in Hinduism. People from all over the world come looking for “authentic” yoga gurus in the Himalayas. India is called a land of gurus, sages, sanyassins and yoga is the reason for that.

Thanks to various campaigns that its importance is felt now more than ever.

3.The glory of freedom- Hinduism gives it followers a lot of freedom. They have the right to make their own choices based on their conscience and reasons. Also, you have the freedom to choose your own god. There is huge variety of over 33 crores gods. There was a time when population of India was less than deities we have. You can also worship Ravana. Although we see Ravana as the villain of Ramayana but he is revered at few places. These people have their own reasons to worship him.

Religion does not define right or wrong in any of its scriptures. If you go through the story of Mahabharat in detail, it is observed that Duryodhana although was the wrong-doer but he never concealed his intentions unlike Dhritrashtra who came out to be hypocrite. Even Guru Drona, Bhishma Pitamah could not differentiate between the right or wrong. Krishna also used deceptions and evil means for victory. In essence it tells about the dynamic nature of human being. No person is totally right or wrong, evens the gods.

4.Glory of customs- Hinduism gives its followers many reasons to celebrate. This has more to do with togetherness in the society than just rituals. We have festivals in almost every  month. Some big festivals like Holi, Diwali, also there are regional festivals like chhath puja popular in Bihar,Uttar Pradesh, pongal, onam etc.

These festivals are full of colors, they are very rejuvenating. Since nothing is complete with the food, so this gives a chance to gourmet within us to enjoy as well. Unlike other religions which are limited to few festivals, Hinduism offers you a lot, innumerable Gods, the obvious reason.

So these are few points that make Hinduism, a great religion in itself.

It may be different from person to person but it should focus on well being of mind and body.  In a world ,that is obsessed with nights, morning  are the gold mines. So this article is about how I make my Gold morning.

I am an early riser. I get up at 5am and thus starts my day. Since a good start is necessary, so I start with yoga including pranayam and meditation. This whole process takes around 30-45 minutes. This is followed by brushing my teeth with Colgate which is very refreshing. After  that I start with my most prioritized work. As I am a student, so my prioritized work is my most difficult subject. So whatever needs greater concentration, I start with that. Thus basically it is solving problems, reading etc
.
By the time its 8, I have checked out my most important work of the day from my to do list. Further, I read newspaper, eat breakfast , and do other morning rituals. This sets the day in good pace and then I leave for my classes.

It is important to make mornings energized rather than dull, since it sets your day. Exercise, yoga can be the best for it. Apart from it one can also write some gratitude notes or lines to feel graceful about life. These are the various things I do to make my Good mornings, Gold Mornings
